August - Generating Legally Defensible Data: A Sampling and Field Testing Perspective.

In recent environmental publications, there is a growing recognition that there are vulnerabilities in field sampling practices which can have a significant effect on data quality. Staff managing field sampling activities needs to be aware of these vulnerabilities and how field records may be challenged in court to develop an effective program. This presentation will discuss areas for concern when managing field sampling, what training is needed to assure records are defensible, and a framework for helping field sampling staff “do the right thing” when under the extreme pressure of being in the field. Finally, the attendees will be introduced to the NELAC Institute’s Standard for field sampling organizations that are based on international quality systems.

Speaker:

Boni Bigornia
Boni Bigornia is Vice President for ARCADIS’ flood risk management program. Prior to that, he was the Corps of Engineers regional program manager for the Corps flood risk management at the South Pacific Division. After Katrina, Boni was asked to develop the Program Management Plan for the Chief’s 12 Actions for Change, after which he served as the planning and policy expert on the national vegetation management team, and served on the national Risk Team for Actions for Change.  His first task upon joining the Corps’ Los Angeles District in 1985 was to provide the hydraulic design for the 550-ft high Seven Oaks Dam, eventually serving as Section Chief for the Reservoir Regulation Section and Chair for the interagency Colorado River Forecast Service Technical Committee.  Prior to Corps service, Boni worked as a coastal engineering aide for the Dutch Waterworks Department on the Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier, and as a river and floodplain engineer for the Alberta Department of the Environment.

April - Stepping into a Green Future

CarbonFlow, Inc. develops software for carbon market participants. They were founded in 2006 to address the process inefficiencies and supply hurdles in the current carbon market.
Despite rapid growth, carbon markets remain very inefficient today. The current creation process acts as a constraint on the supply, and, along with the lack of transparency, affects the price of credits. Supply constraints are obvious hurdles in a market where there is clearly a growing demand from both the Kyoto targets and an emerging voluntary market.
CarbonFlow works to drastically lower the cost and time it takes to create a credit. Their product suite also improves the velocity and transparency of this growing market, while enabling the expansion of the carbon credit supply.

The Carbonflow™ suite enhances productivity, reduces both administration costs and the financial risks of managing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) offset projects, and manages the delivery of certified carbon credits for buyers and sellers worldwide. These carbon markets have accelerated since the inception of the "cap-and-trade" market system of the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and in 2006 exceeded US$30 billion in total value.
Our Speaker:

Neal Dikeman - Neal has been one of the founding partners of Jane Capital Partners LLC, an energy and technology merchant bank whose clients have included the technology arms of multinational energy companies. Carbonflow is his fourth startup, and the third he has helped launch cross-border. He previously cofounded SC Power Systems, Inc. and its successor Zenergy Power plc (AIM:ZEN) in superconductor technology, helped launch WaiterPad POS Systems, Inc. in wireless hospitality POS solutions, and led the spin-out of Fideris, Inc. in fuel cell test & measurement. He has served as a director of several technology companies, edits the Cleantech Blog, named one of the 50 Best Business Blogs by London Times, and chairs Cleantech.org. Before entering private equity, he began his career in energy investment banking at Bankers Trust, and has a B.A. from Texas A&M University.

March - Sustainable Redevelopment of Brownfield Sites for Bay Area Communities

Katie Lamont, Senior Project Developer, Eden Housing

Katie Lamont is a senior project developer with Eden Housing, a regional non-profit housing developer based in Hayward. Before joining Eden in 2003, Katie was a project manager with the Los Angeles Community Design Center. She has cleaned up brownfield sites and redeveloped them with green housing in Hayward, Richmond, and Signal Hill. Katie will highlight the work that Eden has been performing in support of affordable housing and mixed use projects, including green building, for Bay Area communities.

February - Green Chemistry Cornerstone Report

The principles of chemicals policy outlined in this report highlight the need for a modern, comprehensive solution to pressing health, environmental and economic problems associated with California’s management of chemicals and products. These policies will promote the science, technology, and commercial applications of green chemistry: the design, manufacture and use of chemicals, processes and products that are safer for human health and the environment. Building new productive capacity in green chemistry will support a vibrant economy, open new opportunities for investment and employment, and protect human health and the state’s natural resources.
