Schedules/Timing:
  • 9:30 AM: Meet at the Tiburon Ferry entrance.
  • 9:50AM:  Board Ferry -  The Tiburon Ferry departs for Angel Island promptly at 10:00 AM. It takes about 15-20 minutes to arrive at Angel Island.
Those that are late and miss the 10:00 AM ferry, may wish not to do the hike because the next ferry departs at 11:00 AM and we'll be well along the way by then.

  • 10:15 AM: Once on the Island meet (circle up) just off the Ayala Cove Dock near the restrooms.
  • 10:15 AM - 3:00 PM: Hike, stopping for lunch along the way.  We'll be back at the Ayala Cove dock by at least 3:00 PM because the last ferry for Tiburon departs at 3:30 PM and we must all be on it.
  • 3:20 PM: Board the Last ferry for Tiburon
  • 3:40 PM: Arrive in Tiburon, Optional stop for organic ice cream at a local hamburger spot

The Hike (see Attached Map):
  • This is a loop hike circumnavigating the island.
  • Participants should be in reasonably good shape and  able to complete a ~ 5     hour hike totaling  ~6.7  mile.
  • Elevation change: ~+850 feet but with gradual ascent over the 6.7 miles.
We'll observe/talk about the island's history and geology.

Once on the Island we should meet (circle up) just off the Ayala Cove Dock near the restrooms. We will then hike:
  • Counterclockwise around the island first to the Visitor's Center for a brief orientation/visit, then-
  • Hike up to Perimeter Road continuing around the island, stopping at various point including the Rock Crusher, Nike Missile Site, etc.
  • Lunch at East Garrison Group Picnic Area with numerous picnic tables (several in the shade) and  very nice adjacent restrooms.
  • After lunch, we'll continue past old concrete buildings (Thousand Man Barracks)at Fort McDowell to the U.S. Immigration Station (we should not take more than 20 minutes at this location).
  • If time permits, some hikers may wish to tour the Immigration Station Museum (additional fee of $5 fee per person).
  • Continue around on the Perimeter Road to the shortcut trail with steep stairs/hand rails back to ferry dock.
  • Depart Angel Island promptly at 3:30 PM.
  • Optional stop for organic ice cream at  a local hamburger place once back in Tiburon.

What to wear/bring:
  • Loose/comfortable clothes, layered because it may be cool/breezy on the ferry trips but may warm up once we begin hiking.
  • Hat or cap for sun protection
  • Comfortable walking/running shoes: I don't recommend sandals or flip/flops because of the hike's length and one steep downhill portion at the hike's end. Hiking boots and/or sticks-poles are not absolutely necessary because most of the Perimeter Road is paved.
  • Back pack for carrying lunch and water: there are several spot for refilling water bottles, but because of the drought and limited water supplies on Angel Island, I can't guarantee that they'll be working.
  • Camera (binoculars) for recording magnificent views from ferry voyage and views of San Francisco Bay, particularly from the south end of the island.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • Small first aid kit and emergency information.
